The great auk used to be found around St Kilda. The last known British specimen was killed on Stac an Armin in 1840 (the St Kildans thought it was a witch!). The bird became extinct in 1844 when the very last one was killed in Iceland. This mounted specimen in Glasgow Museums is NOT from St Kilda.
