Basking Shark
St Kilda’s Jaws

Sometimes basking sharks are seen around St Kilda. These huge fish grow to be over 10m long. Although they are really big and have huge mouths, they only eat tiny animals and plankton that live in the water. You can spot them from the shore or from a boat by recognising their dorsal fin and further behind, the tip of their tail as they slowly swim along feeding with their mouths wide open.
