Each year
the St Kildan people would kill, or harvest, seabirds,
including gannets from Boreray and the Stacs. It was
a very hard and dangerous job for the men because the
birds nest on high cliffs. The dead birds were then
shared amongst the community.
They used them for many things. They used their meat
for food, their oil for lamps and their feathers to
pay the rent. Their wings were even used as a kind of
brush to sweep up the ashes from the fire! |
