First puffling of the year

26 July 2014
It's puffling time on Hirta!

Young puffins leave their burrows at night and should head out to sea. Unfortunately, some get a wee bit disorientated and end up flying towards the buildings in Village Bay.  I found this lively wee chap very early this morning. He 'dashed' past me and then tried to have a nibble on my finger when I eventually caught him! I'll release him tonight under the cover of darkness so the skuas don't eat him.First puffling of 2014

Thanks to Jenny, the NTS volunteer, for holding on to wee puff while I took a photo, This was the first time she had seen a young puffin and she was understandably very happy!Jenny, the NTS volunteer, meeting a puffling for the first time
