This summer saw a return paddle to St Kilda by members of Stornoway Canoe Club. Back in 1965, Hamish and Ann Gow set off in a plywood and canvas double kayak without a compass and navigated using a map torn from an encyclopaedia. This year Angus Smith, local boat-builder and skipper helped Stornoway Canoe Club to replicate the journey in June 2012. On this occasion Christine Stewart and Dolina Swanson became the first female duo to complete the challenging crossing. Not only were they paddling a retro styled kayak but in keeping their clothing and spray decks were fabricated appropriately although using modern state of the art material.
