Mixed up May

31 May 2015

May was an odd month.  So much of our activity on island is influenced by the weather, it's not that conditions were terrible but just consistently a bit rubbish!  We had a few days of sun, some rain, many hail showers, a few snow flurries, mist to sea level and lots of wind.Rain in May

At times it felt like the sky was about to fall in:Sky falling in over Boreray

The sea was often choppy so we went unusually long stretches of time without seeing any boats. But like buses, wait ages and then two turn up at once.Ships are like buses

When conditions were good the boats gathered like a flock of birds in the bay but we were very pleased to see them and have someone different to talk to!Calm day in May with day boats

And most importantly for me, plenty of seabirds to monitor!Razorbills in a plotPuffins resting in carn morFulmars to monitor

In meteorological terms, 'Summer' begins tomorrow.  Let's hope it brings settled weather and in turn lots of visitors, happy Work Party people, plenty of time on the hill and lots of seabird chicks to monitor.
