Uist trio return to St Kilda

30 August 2013
Visitors to St Kilda recently included the only three surviving members of the Uist based contractor team who worked on St Kilda in the 60s.

Alex MacPhee from Nunton (Benbecula), Norman MacDonald from Griminish (Benbecula) and John MacAulay from Bayhead (North Uist) were on their first visit back to Hiort since they left back in August 1966 - a period of 47 years. Uist trio - John, Normal and Alex - group photo (Photo - Donald MacPhee)

They were employed at that time by Wm Govan and Sons Ltd who had the Range term contract at that time. Wm Govan's main headquarters were in Ayr but they had a work base in Balivanich for some years in the 60s when they dealt with maintenance and construction work on the Range.   Alex, Norman and John travelled to Hiort on board the Mull in May 1966 and then returned to Loch Carnan on board one of the LCTs some three months later. They thoroughly enjoyed their trip and recalled many happy memories of their time on Hiort all those years ago.Uist trio - John, Normal and Alex - releasing the mail boat (Photo - Donald MacPhee)

Thanks to Alasdair MacEachan for writing this entry and to Donald MacPhee for the photographs
